Cosmetic Acupuncture, also known as Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture, is a non-surgical and natural approach to reduce the signs of aging and improve overall skin health. A typical treatment course is 10-15 sessions, and usually a maximum of 3 treatment courses is recommended. Each treatment course may focus on a distinct facial area, such as the neck, cheek and jowls, or forehead. Some patients will need more treatments than others. Sessions are administered at least once weekly, with a maximum of 3 treatments per week with a 1-day hiatus between treatments. Following a complete treatment course, I recommend monthly maintenance visits. Treatments can be enhanced with home routine of facial cupping and gua sha and suggested dietary guidelines, including herbal remedies.

Results of hydrated, softened and glowing skin are visible within 1 – 2 weeks. Patients report that even after the first treatment they find their skin has become softer and easier to manage. Their skin is hydrated and dryness disappears– this is due to the instant blood flow that arrives to the face and skin during facial acupuncture, oxygenating the cells and  boosting oxygen and nutrient transfer to the skin. Working on motor points will see that the muscles in the face are more relaxed and tension in brow and jawline is softening. There is increased colour in the face and a brightened complexion.

Your first session will involve an overall Traditional Chinese Medicine health assessment to determine any areas of imbalance. Once the treatment begins many needles will be inserted into the face and body, however, these needles are extremely fine and inserted in such a gentle manner that clients find it incredibly relaxing, often falling asleep during the treatment. The treatment will end with a mini facial cupping or gua sha session with high quality facial oil.

This protocol requires 10-15 sessions and treatments should be twice a week for the first three weeks, then weekly treatments for the following sessions. It is important to complete all sessions to achieve the full effect and long-lasting results. While many people notice some results after their first treatment, Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture has a cumulative effect with the best improvement usually noticed around the seventh treatment. Maintenance treatments are recommended every 4-6 weeks to maintain best results, with the entire protocol being repeated every 3-5 years.

There is no downtime associated with facial acupuncture, which means you can have treatments without having to worry how it may affect your day. We do however recommend being gentle with your body and rest after each session as the effect of acupuncture does still continue to work even after the needles have been taken out.

The most likely effects post-treatment include flushing of the face. This is very normal and related to the increased circulation of blood to the face. Occasionally minor and temporary bruising may occur at the site of needle insertion. This is usually painless and resolves itself after a couple of days.
